Before the music industry colonized it, the do-it-yourself underground was a space of exodus and experimentation, often in violent opposition to the rest of the world. This was the context in which Catharsis appeared, one of a new wave of bands to meld metal drama with the raw urgency of hardcore punk. They quickly distinguished themselves by an almost self-destructive intensity and uncompromising anticapitalist ethic. Inverting Christian iconography to champion the struggle of the individual against a hostile cosmos, they took up the centuries-old banner No Gods, No Masters, extending this project of total defiance into their increasingly tumultuous lives. This apocalyptic orientation in turn informed their music, as they sought to hit upon the magic combination of words, harmonies, and rhythms that could spark a global conflagration. This discography includes their debut 7”, the “Samsara” and “Passion” LPs, the split LPs with Gehenna and Newborn, and the final Catharsis song, “Absolution,” recorded alongside “Arsonist’s Prayer” in their last session but never released—totaling well over two hours of music. All the lyrics, manifestos and artwork for all the releases are also included, along with zine interviews, video footage, and posters, fliers, and handouts from various eras of the band's existence.

All songs were remastered with a very light touch, encoded from the original files, and have complete metadata including album art and the song's lyrics. Hearkening back to the days when anarcho-punk was characterized by bands as diverse as Crass, Chumbawumba, and Contropotere, the songs on this album combine d-beat power, slower and faster hardcore, harsh noise, and even a passage from a traditional Italian anarchist folk ballad. This is intense, defiant, dark music, but it is based in compelling melodies; you can scream these songs at the top of your lungs in a riot, but you could also sing them quietly to yourself in jail to maintain your spirits. Recorded at Mars Studio (known for recording Catharsis, Undying, and scores of more famous hardcore bands), “Germinate” comprises 7 songs in 36 minutes, an epic paean to self-determination and resistance; with a physical CD and lyric booklet packaged in letter-pressed gatefold chipboard sleeves, hand-made by the band and their friends. Harmonizing surprising vocal stylings with a dynamic assortment of instrumental tactics, Froseph takes both an aggressive and soft spoken approach with the songs on “Deep Breath.” It's both slow and fast-paced, smooth and rough, coping with deep-rooted insecurities and confronting a long-avoided past of sexual abuse, denial and their affects on everyday interactions while simultaneously constructing a sense of optimism and buoyancy. Filastine, a former member of ¡Tchkung! and founding participant in the Infernal Noise Brigade, has been drawing on musical traditions from all around the globe to compose incendiary anarchist music for well over a decade now. Finally, they have composed a half hour of music they feel might be able to do more to break hearts and inspire insane acts of resistance than it does to promote consumption and spectatorship. With few bands in the punk scene that can still make our hearts beat faster, let alone break them as they need to be broken from time to time, it's a real honor for us to release the first full-length from The Spectacle, a band whose music we find deeply moving. These kids from the northern tip of Norway have recorded the most beautiful, dynamic, aggressive, dark punk record of the year, hands down. They draw on the work of Undying, Zegota, Gehenna, Catharsis, His Hero Is Gone, and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, but they make themselves worthy of those comparisons by picking up where those bands left off to set a new standard in expressions of desperation, rage, and love. Chris Sand, performing here as Sandman, is a long-time resident of Olympia by way of Western Montana, where he grew up—and this duality can be found front and center in his music. His unique fusion of folk/country with a modern singer/songwriter sensibility plays out in a refreshingly vital and sincere album. At times utterly heartbreaking, the album is given light by a genuine humor, and a vision is crafted of someone who has fought forest fires and crushing emotional breakdowns alike, but managed to find a way to live through it all, with a weathered smile and hearty taste for more. The songs range from simple folks songs with just a voice and an acoustic guitar to songs with full instrumentation, including a cello, hurdy gurdy and even a harmonium! Musically eclectic, the album still flows as a cohesive whole, from fast paced narrative sing-alongs to achingly personal, gutter-dredging dirges.

Their last recording, and I think we all feel honored that we could release it . . . it really gives substance to all the potential they showed on their earlier records. I think of what I'd hoped Neurosis would do after Enemy of the Sun, and for me, this is the realization of that smothered hope, only coming from a hardcore background musically and politically. Musically quite daring and innovative, from a right-on band that we sorely miss.
